Course Overview

The Level 2 award in understanding dementia has been designed to raise standards in dementia care using an approach which places compassionate care at the heart of the training. It focuses on the importance of person centred approaches to care and examines how a person with dementia can live well within society. This course explores the different types of dementia and the unique journey each person with dementia experiences.

How will this course benefit me?

The course is designed to enhance participant's knowledge and to help them to understand that the experience and progression of dementia is unique to the individual. It also examines learner's attitudes towards dementia and separates fact from fiction. It's often difficult when in a public facing role to understand why people with dementia exhibit certain behaviours and more importantly, to know how to react. This course, supported by our tutors available by telephone, helps to overcome some of the learners' concerns as well as equip them for an ever increasing condition that they are likely to come across.

The Course Content
Section 1
Introduction to Dementia

To kick off the course you will look at what we mean by dementia, the changes in the brain that can lead to dementia symptoms and some of the most common forms of dementia.

Section 2
Providing Support to People Living with Dementia

This section concentrates on the support that can be provided to people with dementia to help them to carry on living normally for as long as possible.

Section 3
Caring for People with Dementia

In this section you will learn about some of the challenges involved in caring for people with dementia.

Section 4
Drug Treatments for Alzheimer's and Other Forms of Dementia

This section is optional as it is not required to achieve the qualification. However, it is included to provide a greater depth of knowledge and understanding if you are working within the context of a pharmacy or GP's surgery. It looks at some of the medicines that are available to help with dementia symptoms, and how medicines taken by people with dementia for other conditions can affect dementia symptoms and why regular medication reviews are important.

You must complete all multiple choice assessments at the end of each section, then a mock exam comprising of 30 multiple choice questions.

RSPH Certification

On successful completion of the mock examination, and in order to be certificated by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH), applicants will be registered for the official RSPH examination. This exam follows the same format as the mock examination described above. Once complete you'll also have access to RSPH Associate Membership as well.
