Learners in Northern Ireland

The Pharmacy Technician Training Programme is suitable for learners in Northern Ireland, as long as they work under the supervision of a Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) registered pharmacist, or a General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) registered pharmacist or pharmacy technician.

Teaching material is delivered through blended learning, combining e-learning, virtual classrooms and videos. Learners are supported by an appointed Buttercups Training tutor and a workplace training supervisor. Learners will be provided with a tailored training plan to facilitate their progression on the programme.

To be eligible, learners must be employed pre-registration pharmacy technicians working for a minimum of 14 hours per week. Learners are required to have a designated workplace training supervisor (either a pharmacist or pharmacy technician) who will oversee the training and support the learner. Learners must be provided with a minimum of 10% of their working hours as protected development time.

Prior to commencing on the programme, learners are required to be screened to ensure they are suitable to embark on their pharmacy technician training. This will consist of academic, health and character checks. We cannot accept applications from self-funded learners. The employer is required to support this programme.

Workplace training supervisors will also be required to undergo a short training course prior to the learner being enrolled to help them understand their role in supporting learners.

Please note:

The Pharmacy Technician Training Programme must be supported and funded by your employer, as we're unable to accept self-funded applications for the programme from our learners under any circumstances.

The GPhC's training requirements for applicants with a non-UK pharmacist or pharmacy technician qualification have recently been updated, and in order to register as a pharmacy technician in the UK you are now required to complete in full a currently accredited, integrated knowledge and competence qualification. Our Pharmacy Technician Training Programme which meets these standards is assessed holistically, and therefore all candidates need to work through the programme in it's entirety in order to complete the qualification. As such we unfortunately cannot exempt learners from any of the constituent assessments from the programme, or offer any recognition of prior learning or accreditation of previous qualifications against the programme. This includes any pharmacy qualifications completed overseas or in the UK, or as part of either an MPharm degree or the foundation training year.

Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) Add-On

We offer an Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) Course alongside the PTTP programme. Please indicate your interest on the PTTP enrolment form.

APTUK Approved Programme

This ACPT Course is approved by the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK) to meet the National Education Framework: Final Accuracy Checking of Dispensed Medicines and Products (2019), which is available on the APTUK website.

The scope of the course is to train technicians to carry out the final accuracy check of listed dispensed items clinically approved by a pharmacist. It does not encompass aseptic dispensing, self-checking or pre-packing. The framework is dependent upon Standard Operating Procedures being in place (for accuracy checking which define the scope of what both a learner and fully qualified Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician can and cannot check against a clinically screened prescription).

Learners must be supported by a nominated Facilitator in the workplace, who is a pharmacist or ACPT with suitable experience. The Facilitator will receive a website login for the ACPT Facilitator Course to support them in the role, including assessment guidance and resources. For learners on the PTTP programme, the Facilitator may be the same person as their Workplace Training Supervisor (WTS) or Workplace Facilitator (WF).

For further information on the ACPT course content and features, please see our ACPT Course page.
